Insulin injections and meal times
The aim of set meal and injection times is that
the glucose peak after a meal and the peak action of insulin coincide.
This prevents severe fluctuations in blood glucose levels.
Discuss the feeding regime that will best suit
you and your dog with your veterinarian.
General recommendations are:
- Dogs that receive 1 daily insulin injection
One third of the daily ration is fed when the insulin is injected and
the remaining ration is fed to coincide with the lowest blood glucose
concentration, around 6-8 hours later.
- Dogs that receive two daily insulin injections
Half the daily food ration and an insulin injection are given at 12
hourly intervals.
